Springtime 2018 on the air.

IF you are expecting a selection of Short Wave and Medium Wave logs in this post - Think again! In March and April, I decided to take a break from the aforementioned wavebands and browse the Long Wave and FM bands. The latter of those bands was also to learn more about a recently purchased receiver, which may also feature in this post.

The FM logs to follow, as the Long Wave logs chronologically precede them. But first, housekeeping notes: Times in UTC (GMT), frequencies in kiloHertz (kHz), MegaHertz (MHz). Transmission power in watts or kiloWatts (kW).

  • 7 March: 1902 UTC: 171 kHz: Medi 1 via Nadar, Morocco, 2000 kW. Very strong French speech.
  • 7 March: 1902 UTC: 183 kHz: Europe 1 via Saarlouis, Germany (France/Luxembourg/Germany border), 2000 kW. Male speech in French, 'Music club' style programme. Extensive ad break at 1910 UTC. Male and female speech. Strong to fair reception. To 1914 UTC.
  • 7 March: 1917 UTC: 198 kHz: BBC Radio 4, UK. Strong to fair reception, 500 kW via Droitwich, supplemented by Burghead and Westerglen, both 50 kW. Sir David Attenborough speaks of artworks created by John Craxton, whilst Craxton was in the UK and the Mediterranean ( Crete/Greece). This interview with Sir David Attenborough was part of a preview of the 'Charmed Life' exhibition at the British Museum. New Woody Allen film, starring Kate Winslet; Audio clip from the film, which also stars Justin Timberlake. The movie is called 'Wonder Wheel'. To 1930 UTC.
  • 7 March: 1940 UTC: 216 kHz: RMC Info, Roumoules, France. 1400 kW. French speech, male in the studio with a male on the phone, now playing what sounds like a segue into sports reports. Fair to poor reception. Ad break into sport? Male speech over music, I think it is a sports broadcast. To 1951 UTC.
  • 7 March: 1955 UTC: 225 kHz: Polskie Radio Jedynka via Solec Kujawski, Poland, 1000 kW. Polish speech, news? Russia? Time pips for 20 UTC. Female speech. Male speech (recording?). Good to poor reception. Ad break at 2005 UTC? Music. To 2005 UTC.
  • 7 March: 2023 UTC: 234 kHz: RTL Radio, Beidweiler, Luxembourg. 1500 kW. French speech, discussion, roundtable discussion over French politics - I believe I hear the name 'Macron', the French President, mentioned a few times. Male and female voices. Strong to fair reception. Strong discussion over politics! To 2035 UTC.
  • 7 March: 2040 UTC: 252 kHz: RTÉ Radio 1, Clarkstown, Ireland, 150 kW. Music: Texas 'Say What You Want', Laxley 'Falling', Soak 'Sea Creatures', songs are dedicated to a number of listeners. The closest to my location, broadcasting with 50mW [milliWatts] is The Mouth, which broadcasts from Cockermouth School, Cumbria. I mostly hear speech, some music, but not [clear] enough to log.
