I hope these posts also provide a fitting tribute to some of the stations, presenters, transmission sites no longer on air - Voice of the Mediterranean [VoM], as featured in this post, was based in Malta, originally broadcasting via a Deutsche Welle facility on Malta, until that closed in the mid 1990's. The above broadcast from VoM was most likely to have been heard via transmitters in Rome.

Broadcasts from Malta fell silent early 2004, but I do hope the texts and images from the likes of VoM in these posts do give you a feel for those broadcasts.

My DX Archive: Spring 1999

Radio Sweden broadcast guide, March - October 1999.

"The history book on the shelf, is always repeating itself"...

... Well ABBA certainly knew what they were talking about when they won the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton. "Waterloo" marked the beginning of their 8-year reign at the top of the charts all over the world, from the UK to Japan, from the US to Russia. They sold over 300 million records and with classic dancefloor fillers such as "Dancing Queen" and "Voulez Vous" their music still lives on today.
ABBA stopped making new music long ago, but since their demise in 1982 countless other Swedish acts have followed in their wake.
Europe and Roxette made it big during the 80's and Ace of Base hit the top in the early 90's.
But the biggest Swedish successes are to be found in today's charts, with Swedish music dominating the airwaves around the globe."

THE Summer of 1996 is our destination, for this selection of logs of radio broadcasts received on the Short Wave band. The logs don't actually state the receivers used, so from memory, the receivers used at the time were a Hitachi TRK 5854 E, or a Zeon Tech Multi Band Receiver.
