BBC reporter freed from captivity

The show was fantastic, a great night has had by all. It was a great experience, which began around 5pm when Rachel, Jackie, Simon, Jamie and myself arrived at Carlisle, taking in a short walk to Brunton Park from Rosehill. Entry to Brunton Park was a walk along the exterior of the Cumberland Building Society Stand (East Stand), gaining entry through the stewarded cordon at the corner of the Waterworks End (Petterill End) and the Cumberland Building Society Stand, with the stage having being built at the Petterill End of the stadium, the home of Carlisle United Football Club.

First on stage were the Carlisle band The Monroes who gave a great little show from 6pm for about twenty minutes. The families of the band members were seated up in the Pirelli Family Stand and roared their approval as the band played a set of their own songs in their home city, although this stage was a little different to previous venues, as the male vocalist said "This is a bit different to 'The Office' in Botchergate, eh?!"

Next on stage were the main support act The Storys who are on the UK leg of the 'Rocket Man' tour with Sir Elton, they seemed a good band, I made a point of watching The Monroes as they are a local band but The Storys turned up whilst I was in the queue for chips (No curry sauce or gravy as they had run out) and a cup of tea (No milk or sugar, they had run out). I did spot my usual snack bar at Paddock North was open, but was diagonally opposite where I was standing among the food outlets stationed infront of The Warwick (Warwick Road End), so I could have, if I had tried, weaved my way through the seating to see if the gate was open which would have given me access to the snack bar. Which, knowing my luck, wouldn't have worked. Apologies for going off on a tangent, The Storys seem a good band and I hear they could be returning to Carlisle in the near future, could be good to see them again.

June 3rd was the one month mark since Madeleine McCann was abducted and the large screens either side of the stage ran the 'Look For Maddie' footage which increased the levels of emotion before Sir Elton John and his Band took to the stage for an incredible and highly memorable night.

Ten years older...

WHEN the end of May rolls around, it will mark the tenth anniversary of an eduring phenomena in the world of rock & pop music - The arrival of Hanson (pictured right: Front left, youngest brother Zac, behind Zac is eldest brother Isaac, on the right is middle brother Taylor).

Isaac, Taylor & Zac hailed from Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA, from where they began singing harmonies in public from a young age and a following grew. Using their initiative, realising they could sing so well, Ike, Tay & Zac decided to become a band: Isaac plays guitar, Taylor plays keyboards, piano & percussion whilst Zac plays the drums. In the period 1995-96, Hanson recorded demos of their songs for record companies that had taken an interest in the band. The demos later appeared on the album '3 Car Garage: The Indie Recordings '95-'96' (558 399-2). The demos worked. Hanson were discovered and signed to Mercury Records, with whom they began working on their album 'Middle Of Nowhere' (534 615-2), which featured new songs alongside the demos which impressed Mercury Records. Three songs migrated from '3 Car Garage...' to 'Middle Of Nowhere', two of which became singles. The first single was the worldwide success 'MMMBop' which was simultaneously Number One in the singles chart in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. That was the final week of May, 1997. In the United Kingdom, Mercury Records kept Hanson fans interested by releasing singles as a 2 CD pairing, for example, 'MMMBop' CD1 (574 499-2) had 4 tracks, CD2 (574 501-2) also had 4 tracks, but one or two tracks would be different and the cover of CD2 would fold out to become a poster.

Hanson's second single was 'Where's the love' (CD1: 574 905-2, CD2: 574 903-2), the video for which was filmed in London, England. Third single would pitch Hanson in the Christmas market: 'I Will Come To You' (CD1: 568 067-2, CD2: 568 133-2) was released along with the album 'Snowed In' (536 717-2), a selection of Christmas songs which Hanson recorded at Sarm Hook End Studios, England, in the summer of 1997.

In the spring of 1998, Hanson released their fourth single taken from 'Middle Of Nowhere' the ballad 'Weird' (CD1: 568 541-2, CD2: 568 625-2) and the fifth single was timed to coincide with their concert at Wembley Arena in June 1998. 'Thinking Of You' (CD1: 568 813-2, CD2: 566 127-2) was followed swiftly by the album 'Live From Albertane' (538 240-2), recorded live in Seattle, USA, July 1998.

Upheaval occured at Mercury when the Universal Music Group was formed. Hanson found themselves transferred from Mercury to Island Def Jam. Already working on their studio album, Ike, Tay & Zac found their creativity stifled. They laboured under Island Def Jam, finally releasing the album 'This Time Around' (542 721-2) in the summer of 2000. The album gave Hanson a Number 15 hit in the UK singles chart with 'If Only' (CD1: 562 751-2, CD2: 562 750-2). Hanson also planned to release the title track of 'This Time Around' as a single, they promoted the song on TV in the UK, but Island Def Jam pulled the release, citing not enough interest for the single. This was the last straw for Hanson with Island Def Jam, Hanson broke away and formed their own record label.

In 2005, through their own record label 3CG Records, Hanson released their album 'Underneath' (COOKCD326) along with a DVD 'Underneath Acoustic Live'. Isaac, Taylor & Zac scored a Number 10 hit in the UK singles chart with 'Penny & Me' (CD1: FRYCD220X, CD2: FRYCD220) and followed with the single 'Lost Without Each Other' (CD1: FRYCD224, CD2: FRYCD224X) Easter 2005.

And so the Hanson story is up to date, marking their 10th anniversary with a new studio album, 'The Walk' and a new single, 'Go', both of which, hopefully, will be a success.

Obituary: Bobby 'Boris' Pickett, performer of 'Monster Mash'

Bobby "Boris" Pickett, whose dead-on Boris Karloff impression propelled the Halloween anthem "Monster Mash" to the top of the charts while cementing his place as one of pop music's most enduring one-hit wonders, has died of leukaemia. He was 69.

Pickett, dubbed "The Guy Lombardo of Halloween" for his impossibly catchy No. 1 song, passed away Wednesday night at the West Los Angeles Veterans Hospital, said his longtime manager, Stuart Hersh. His daughter, Nancy, and his sister, Lynda, were at Pickett's bedside.

Pickett's multimillion selling single hit the charts three separate times: when it debuted in 1962, again in August 1970, and for a third time in May 1973. The resurrections were appropriate for a song where Pickett gravely intoned the forever-stuck-in-your-head chorus: "He did the monster mash. ... It was a graveyard smash."

The novelty hit's fans included Bob Dylan, who sang Pickett's praises before playing the single on his XM Satellite Radio program last October.

The hit single insured Pickett's place in the pantheon of pop music obscurities, said syndicated radio host Dr. Demento, whose long-running program celebrates offbeat tunes.

Pickett's Karloff impression was forged in Somerville, Mass., where 9-year-old Bobby watched horror films in a theater managed by his father. When Pickett launched a Hollywood nightclub act in 1959, it inevitably featured his Karloff impersonation.

Pickett also did the voice when performing with his band the Cordials, particularly during the spoken part of the '50s hit by the Diamonds, "Little Darling." Bandmate Lenny Capizzi convinced Pickett they needed to do a song featuring his impression of the horror impresario, and "Monster Mash" was born.

The song was recorded in another two hours, featuring a then-unknown piano player named Leon Russell and a backing band christened The Crypt-Kickers. It was rejected by four major labels before Gary Paxton, lead singer on the Hollywood Argyles' hit "Alley Oop," released "Monster Mash" on his own.

Egypt or Egremont, the choice is yours

I'M SURE you have heard the story all over the media of Amy Robson, pictured above, the seventeen year old Cumbrian, who, with her family, went on holiday to Egypt sometime ago. The story goes somewhere along the lines of whilst Miss Robson was in Egypt, she met a twenty-something bar owner, they fell for each other. The Robson family returned to Cumbria, though Amy decided to return to her love in Egypt, though without telling the family, or anyone else.

When the penny dropped, the police were called and Amy was traced to Egypt. Amy's family again flew out to Egypt and the papers say Amy was "lured" to the airport by her family, promising her a day out sightseeing in Egypt... The Robsons returned to England where national newspapers were waiting to capture the moment the runaway returned home. Now that really is a slow news day!

Meanwhile, back in Egypt, Amy's love has said, in an interview with a UK daily newspaper, he will wait for her "for ever". Till the next holidaymaker arrives in his bar.

Finally, I'm sure the school (in Wigton) where Amy has been studying higher education will also have enjoyed the recent publicity whilst one of their pupils was missing . . .

Summer has started . . . I think!

TIME BEGINS IN ANTHORN VILLAGE

THE UK’s time signal was beamed from a former military base in a remote part of north Cumbria for the first time yesterday.

The 13 individual masts which dominate the skyline at Anthorn will be used to transmit the radio signal full-time from April 1 and time will be accurate to 1/1,000th of a second.

It is the signal used to set all official clocks and the ‘pips’ on BBC radio.

Tests of the signal began yesterday and will increase in the run-up to the switch-over. For the first day, low cloud covered the tops of the 13 masts which are connected by a network of heavy, metal cables.

In the blustery conditions, a few sheep were seen taking shelter in one of cluster of bushes that are inside the cordoned-off site where a handful of redundant, old war-time brick buildings still stand on the peninsula.

The UK time signal has been broadcast from a station near Rugby since 1927.

It is moving to Anthorn because the body responsible, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), is switching contracts to the VT Communications’ transmitter at Anthorn. Previously known as ‘The Time From Rugby’, it will now be referred to as ‘The Time From NPL’.

The signal is used to manage 999 communiciations, the rail network and a wide range of electronic networks, including cash machines, speed cameras and mobile phone billing systems.

The system at Anthorn is being upgraded and it is believed it will not need as much maintenance as the Rugby equipment.

“Maintaining accurate time is essential to keeping the modern world working,” said NPL managing director Steve McQuillan.

“Most people only need time to be accurate to within a few seconds or even minutes, but global navigation systems, the internet, the power industry and financial systems are just some of the industries that depend on very accurate time to operate.”

NPL, at Teddington in south-west London, is one of only five centres worldwide using the latest caesium fountain atomic clocks to contribute to the world time standard, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

The Anthorn transmitter is usually used for relaying orders to submarines on 19.6 kHz under the callsign GBZ.

It is one of four NATO facilities with three others in Norway, Germany, and Italy.

The Anthorn site began its career as a military landing strip during World War One, being used as an emergency landing ground for RAF Silloth in World War Two. The Royal Navy took it over in December 1942 and created RNAS Anthorn, also known as HMS Nuthatch. After the war, it was kept as an aircraft unit until it closed in 1958.

Residents have welcomed their transmitter’s new, modern use.

Sandra Mitchinson has lived on Solway Drive for over 20 years.

She said: “I suppose it’s a nice thing to have now but I think we should also get someone local to do the speaking clock, the voice for it too.

“We don’t have much going for us here so this would be good for us.”

Stine will be celebrating her Birthday in Australia, as she is in Sydney, engaging in Further Education.

The Birthday Book : February 2007

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my cousin, Miss Sarah Cowin, who celebrates her 27th Birthday on Friday 2nd February. The portrait (below) shows Sarah on the right, with Miss Anna Tomlinson on the left, receiving their Degrees from the University of Liverpool (Chester Campus) at a ceremony held in Chester Cathedral, November 2002 :

Also celebrating her Birthday this weekend is Miss Claire Wilkinson, who will be enjoying her 19th Birthday on Saturday 3rd February. Claire has featured previously in Reporting From The Fox Tower, as one half of 'Team 118' in the Brough 'Pram Race' last July (2006). The other half of 'Team 118' was Miss Hollie Steadman. Appleby In Westmorland : Home of the Stars

THE BEAUTIFUL Cumbrian market town of Appleby In Westmorland is home to three people in the public eye. First is Helen Skelton (pictured below), joint presenter of the BBC Radio Cumbria (weekday) Breakfast show, a programme she broadcasts with Gordon Swindlehurst between 7 and 10 am. Helen's on air personality on the Breakfast Show has been described by Gordon as "Current affairs with a smile" and with a soft voice, Helen is suited to broadcasting, sometimes bringing humour to, a programme based around news. Helen's portrait:


Second in to the spotlight is Helen's brother, Gavin Skelton. Gavin, age 25, is currently part of the successful team at Gretna Football Club, who are currently leading the Scottish Football League First Division. Come the end of this season, Gretna should be promoted to the Scottish Premier League if the team continue their good form. Gavin plays in midfield for Gretna, his most high profile game being the Scottish Cup Final, Hampden Park, May 2006 v Hearts. Gretna pushed Hearts to extra time in the final, Hearts eventually winning on a penalty shoot-out. Prior to joining Gretna, Gavin spent some time with Carlisle United Football Club.

Finally for this feature, Lara Parkin :


Lara, 19, is currently working to promote Stobart Motorsport, taking part in promotional photography (pictured above) to help establish Stobart Motorsport as a team recognised throughout the motorsport world. Lara's first foray into motorsport promotional work was with Paul Bird's motorsport team, from where she was recruited by Stobart Motorsport. In recent media interviews, Lara insists the promotional work is short term, as she is studying in higher education and has a long term interest in sport, in particular, competing in athletics events.

This feature is tied together nicely with Lara being the girlfriend of three years of Gavin Skelton.

Alfred Wainwright

TODAY'S post is a simple one - this post is to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Alfred Wainwright, author of the 'Pictorial Guides' of the Lake District.

AW was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, but moved to Kendal, where he lived all his life.

I know I have some of AW's books in the bookcase, beautiful reading, I'm sure you do too.

That's my logs for January, I could be accused of laziness this month as most broadcasts originated from the VT Communications transmitting station at Skelton, here in Cumbria. If you're really interested, you can view the transmitting station by travelling the B5305 Penrith - Wigton road, although the tallest mast at Skelton which stands at around 1000 feet tall, can be seen from the M6 motorway when travelling north of Penrith.

An Australian Summer

TODAY'S EDITION OF 'FOX TOWER is all about Summer. Yes Summer is here at last! Well, at least if you're in the Southern Hemisphere, it is. Three - sorry, four - people enjoying the Summer in Sydney, Australia, are my feature today.

First is Mella, featured in the photograph on the left, in her role as the Prom Queen. Mella is a citizen of Sydney, a city she loves, as you will find in her MySpace webpage, which you can visit here.

Second is Miss Stine Slettemark, who is living in Sydney whilst she is studying a Tourism course at college in the city. Stine has her home in Oslo, Norway, a city which takes on a much different appearance to Sydney at this time of year, a fact not lost by Stine, as her blog on her Windows Live Space shows. Greetings to my cousin, Sarah Cowin and her partner Dave, who are also in Sydney. They have travelled from the cold, wet, UK, to Sydney, where, in a letter home recently, Sarah also found the summer weather a shock to the system, saying she kind of missed the cold and rain which is constant here in the UK at this time of year!! Sarah & Dave report they have secured accommodation and employment, close to the harbour, with views of the World-famous Opera House. After their stint in Sydney, Sarah & Dave plan to travel to Perth, Western Australia, but that is in the near future. This is Sarah's second visit to Australia, her previous visit was a decade ago, December 1996. How time passes...!

And Finally... An Eventful 2006...

Missed the chaos? Fat chance!

TRAFFIC was brought to a standstill after a wagon spilled cooking oil all over the road.

The lorry was driving along Marina Way, in Hartlepool, when its side door suddenly opened, causing several barrels to fall into the road. Traffic chaos quickly followed and at least two accidents were caused by cars skidding on the oil. The lorry driver, who did not wish to be named, said: “It’s just an accident. I didn’t mean for it to happen. “The clip on the side door has broken off, so the side door came up. “The first right hand turn I took, the barrels tipped out, and when I looked in my side mirror I could just see them coming out.” The driver of the Eden Valley Oils wagon was turning right into Middleton Road when the barrels full of used cooking oil spilled out. Two fire engines attended the scene at around 1.15pm yesterday and firefighters closed the road and worked to remove the oil. Watch manager at Stranton Fire Station Barry Waites said: “I believe there were a couple of minor bumps as a result. “Our job was to remove the oil from the road surface. “We use something called elcef fibres and we brush them into the road. It’s also used in petrol spillages as well. “We also used two tonnes of sand from the council.” The affected area was temporarily made a 20mph speed limit zone in a bid to prevent any further accidents. Buses, meanwhile, were diverted along Lancaster Road and Clarence Road.

A Cumbrian At Christmas


LAST CHRISTMAS was the first posting of 'A Cumbrian At Christmas', in which Reporting From The Fox Tower featured the Cumbrian television actress Roxanne Pallett (You can find the post in the archives, December 2005).

This year, Reporting From The Fox Tower would like to present Cumbrian singer Amanda Tinkler.

Amanda began singing at events around the Eden area, before applying to compete on the television programme 'Stars In Their Eyes : Kids 2002'. Amanda took part in the show, singing "I'm Like A Bird" by Nelly Furtado. The other contestants on the show that day (September 2002) were performing songs by Annie Oakley, Richie Valens, Charlotte Church and Lulu. A vote taken by the studio audience saw Amanda come out on top, winning her a place in the programme Final, which went on air November 2002. All the contestants had a video of support from their friends aired on the show prior to their performance, Amanda's video featured her friends Lesley Davidson and Stephanie Guy.

In the 'Stars In Their Eyes : Kids Live Final 2002', Amanda once again performed as Nelly Furtado, competing against performers singing songs by Donny Osmond, Irene Cara, Eva Cassidy, Millie and Robbie Williams. The competition was open to a public vote, which saw Amanda receive 55 638 votes, placing her fourth in the final results. The final was won by Charlotte Gethin, of Staffordshire, performing as Eva Cassidy singing"Over The Rainbow", for which she received 282 422 votes.

Following her appearances on television, Amanda's bookings for performances began to rise, which included her appearing at events as diverse at the Carlisle Sands Centre Senior Citizens Christmas Party and the switching on of the Christmas lights in Kirkby Stephen, both 2002. In 2004 Amanda appeared on the bill at the inaugural 'Pop2ThePark', an all-day music concert at Bitts Park, Carlisle (featured picture).

Most recently, Amanda has performed at the 2005 Whitehaven Maritime Festival and in 2006 featured on the panel of judges for a talent search sponsored by Eddie Stobart, called 'The Stobart Factor'. Amanda's performance highlight of 2006 was when she was on the bill for an inaugural music concert at Brunton Park, Carlisle, sharing the stage with Lulu and Tony Christie at 'Party On The Pitch'.

Peoples Millions Result!

VIEWERS OF ITV BORDER will have seen the appeal for the Brough Community Fund on 'Lookaround' during the evening of Wednesday 15 November 2006, with the result on Thursday 16th.

I'm pleased to say the Brough Community Fund raised a higher number of votes than the opposing project, a footpath in Brampton. During the day of Thursday 16th, Tim Backshall of ITV Border travelled to Brough to present a cheque for £50 000 to Keren Jane Steadman, Secretary of the Brough Community Fund Committee, and Edward "Chris" Christopher, Chairman, at a packed Brough County Primary School. Well done to all concerned!

Lombard Rally 2006

THE LOMBARD RALLY 2006 passed through Brough this weekend, so I thought I'd place a couple of pictures taken today to mark the Rally:

One Year On

WELCOME TO the latest instalment of Reporting From The Fox Tower, this edition marks the first anniversary of this journal which passed earlier this month, I hope you will continue to read.

A Friend In France

MAY I introduce my friend Cindy De Delley, who resides in the beautiful city of Nice, in the south of France.

Cindy enjoys travelling, which is part of her employment, Cindy is currently in Colombia, Latin America. Cindy told me Colombia is a nice country, very warm at this time of year, very relaxed people.

Cindy has an online journal which you can access here, in which Cindy tells of her experiences. Please note Cindy's journal is in the French language, which I hope will help with language skills.

RECENTLY I'VE had a spot of bother with my radio, I had a difficulty with which it would not function fully, thankfully I seem to have overcome the problem and I listened to a few broadcasters on the Medium Wave band, which are as follows:

RNE 1 of Spain on 684 kHz (Click here for the RNE website),
BBC Radio Five Live on 693 kHz (Have your say on the Five Live Message Board here)
and finally for this lot: France Bleu on 711 kHz (click here for the France Bleu website)

Regarding the above websites, the RNE (Radio Nacional Espana) site is in the Spanish language, whilst the France Bleu site is in the French language. I hope you enjoy the links provided!

Autumn 2006

SEPTEMBER 1st has arrived, and so 'Autumn' has arrived . . . but fear not, it is still time to take a 'late summer' break and Visit Cumbria in 2006!

I know I did mention a project I was going to undertake this summer called 'Visit Cumbria in 2006', but sadly my plans went AWOL and I didn't get anything 'off the ground', so to speak.

Summer 2006 : Celeb Tourist Shocker!

THE picture above shows teenage soul singer Joss Stone foregoing the usual overseas climate for a celebrity holiday, choosing to take a dip in the sea off the Cumbrian coast, somewhere along the Allonby Bay coastline. Obviously, the singer's security and wellbeing is paramount, so when and where the picture was taken is a closely guarded secret, only leaked to me by one of the tabloid papers (the picture that is, not the secret). As you can tell by the expression on young Joss' face, maybe the water off the Cumbrian coast was, to say the least, a little chilly this summer.

So there you go, you wait ages for a post and - bang! - celebrities spotted in our fair county! Always first with the hot gossip, here at RFTFT . . . *

G'Day, Stine!

GOOD LUCK to my friend Stine Slettemark of Oslo, Norway, who will soon be departing Scandinavia for Sydney, Australia, to begin a course studying Tourism, which is scheduled to run for three years.
